Great Britain has always been at the forefront of aviation innovation and achievement. The names of the great constructors such as Avro, De Havilland and Vickers for example can trace their roots right back to the earliest days of powered flight.

However it's easy to overlook the achievements and innovation of the many companies both great and small that supplied materials, components and other products and services without which our Aviation Industry would never have evolved. Rolls Royce, Dunlop, Rotol, Smiths and Hobson will be familiar to many of you , but there are hundreds more whose contributions deserve more recognition.

How then to catalogue these contributors? After much thought and some discussion we could think of no better way than through their adverts and promotional literature.

For the researcher or student of aviation history these provide a concise listing of their key products along with location and contact information. Furthermore the wording of the adverts will frequently provide a meaningful insight into the state, requirements and aspirations of the industry in any given period. For the more casual viewer they are interesting to browse and more than occasionally quite stunning from an artistic perspective!

At the time of writing you're viewing the site in it's early stages. Rather than tackle the project in a strictly chronological order we've decided to provide a broad spread of dates and categories for general interest. However there are many, many more to be listed and these are being processed and added on a daily and ongoing basis.

To facilitate fast loading in the browser the ads on display are scaled to approx 500 - 600 pixels and sometimes grey scaled. If you need a higher resolution image for more detail or for a poster or article perhaps, please ask and we'll be pleased to provide you with an original high resolution scan. The ads have been sourced primarily from a variety of magazines, books, sales brochures.

Finally for now, the purist may have something to say about some of the categories or classifications. We share your pain! But as companies merged, collaborated or contributed to more than one sector of the industry the decision as to where to place them can sometimes seem a bit random. In our defence though regular visitors will notice new categories being added and ads being relocated or sometimes even duplicated to assist the user in their research.

To the designers, producers, manufacturers and suppliers of everything from sheet metal to ejection seats we salute you all.

Thank you for looking in.
