During the westward advance of the Eighth Army the way was prepared for the land forces by heavy bomber night raids.

Every night, week in and week out, squadrons of Halifaxes flew throuhg the darkness with time table precision to dislocate the enemy's transport and defence systems. So regular were these attentions that the service became kknown as the "night mail run."

It is appropriate that ti was operated by Halifax heavy bombers, product of the firm which built the great Handley Page air liners which carried mails on International routes in peacetime.
